Sharks are one of Earth's most ancient and iconic creatures. They come in an incredible variety of shapes and sizes, and have been a part of the planet's ocean ecosystems for at least 450 million years. While some sharks can be dangerous to humans, most species pose no threat and can even be quite friendly. Sharks play a vital role in keeping their ecosystems in balance, and can actually be beneficial to us as well.
Sharks are carnivorous and feed on a variety of prey, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, marine mammals, and even other sharks. They use their strong senses and acute hearing to detect potential sources of nutrition, and they can swim quite quickly if they need to.

Our Favorite Shark Species
From the intimidating Great White Shark to the shallow-water Nurse Shark, there are countless species of sharks that are sure to fascinate you. Below are some of our favorite shark species... but we do love them all!
- Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas) - The bull shark is known for its distinctive stocky build and aggressive behavior. They are able to tolerate a wide range of salinity levels, allowing them to thrive in both freshwater and seawater environments. Bull sharks typically breed during the summer months and can produce litters of up to 13 pups.
- Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) - The great white shark is one of the most recognizable shark species, known for its massive size and predatory behavior. They can be found in coastal waters with temperatures between 54-74 degrees Fahrenheit and can grow up to 6 meters in length.
- Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) - The tiger shark is known for its distinctive tiger-like stripes which are only present on young individuals. They can be found in tropical and subtropical waters and typically grow up to 5 meters in length. Tiger sharks have a reputation for being indiscriminate eaters and are considered dangerous to humans.
- Oceanic Whitetip Shark (Carcharhinus longimanus) - The oceanic whitetip shark can be found in deep waters all over the world and is known for its large, round dorsal fin with a white tip. They are known for their aggressive behavior and have been responsible for many shipwreck survivor deaths.
- Shortfin Mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) - The shortfin mako shark is one of only four species of sharks that are warm-blooded, which helps to increase their speed. They are capable of reaching speeds of up to 46mph and can jump up to 28 ft. in the air. They are also highly valued by sport fisherman.
- Blacktip Reef Shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) - The blacktip reef shark is known for its timid behavior and can typically be found in warm, shallow waters and around coral reefs. They typically grow up to 2 meters in length and are considered a vulnerable species due to overfishing and habitat loss.
- Sandtiger Shark (Carcharias taurus) - The sandtiger shark is an endangered species due to the phenomenon known as intrauterine cannibalism, where baby sharks eat each other while still in the womb. This results in low reproductive rates and a small number of pups born per litter.
- Hammerhead Shark (Sphyrnidae spp.) - Hammerhead sharks are known for their unique head shape, which increases their field of vision. They are aggressive predators and can typically be found near coastlines. There are nine known species of hammerhead sharks, with the scalloped, great and smooth hammerheads considered the most dangerous.
- Blue Shark (Prionace glauca) - Blue sharks are known for their sleek bodies and bright blue coloration. They are not typically considered dangerous to humans but can be curious and investigate boats and divers.
- Lemon Shark (Negaprion brevirostris) - The lemon shark can be found in the subtropical and tropical waters of the Atlantic coast of North and South America. They are typically docile but can become more aggressive during mating season. It is not recommended to keep sharks in captivity as it is difficult to recreate their natural habitat and they don't survive well in captivity.
About Shark Conservation Efforts
Given the important role of sharks in the oceanic health and balance, conservation efforts have increased in recent years, with the aim of stopping the depletion of the planet's shark population. Governments around the world are beginning to monitor the shark trade, increasing regulations, enacting shark finning bans, and creating Marine Protected Areas. Non-profits have been established to create education and awareness both in local communities, as well as world-wide, setting regulations, and tracking sharks with technology.
These initiatives have been paramount in order to protect and conserve shark species, due in part to campaigns like ‘Long Live Sharks’, which bring attention to the need for our oceans to be healthy, and especially for shark species, which play a significant role in maintaining this balance.
